Millions in Taiwan suffer from insomnia

People for whom falling asleep has become a much dreaded nightly battle might be suffering from sleep disorder, said the Taiwan Society of Sleep Medicine yesterday, disclosing that 4.8 million people in Taiwan have difficulty sleeping at night.

A TSSM study shows that more and more people in Taiwan are troubled by lack of sleep, with 24.8 percent reporting some type of sleep disorder, and 11.5 percent suffering from chronic insomnia, which translates into more than one in every 10 people having serious difficulties sleeping on a regular basis.

The study also indicated that more women suffer sleeplessness than men, with menopausal women having the most difficulty falling and staying asleep at night due to the changes in their hormone levels.
